Do you believe that love is like a train ride? It takes you somewhere words cannot describe. An unimaginable place, somewhere you would never expect. Like every adventure, you need a ticket to board.
At Sutera Harbour Resort, we offer such an adventure – a train ride via North Borneo Railway. It features a British Vulcan steam locomotive that was designed and built by the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows, England in 1954.
As one of the only few functional wood-burners left in the world, it is a very special train in Sabah. It operates only twice a week; every Wednesdays and Saturdays from Tanjung Aru to Papar and return.
This morning, the lobby was startled by the ringing of the bell and a bellowing voice hollering “All Aboard!”. Hearing this, passengers gathered around the train master to check their names and were all set to board the bus. Arriving at the Tanjung Aru station, a total of 89 passengers were registered and given a passport to begin their railway journey.
Each of the luxuriously appointed carriages was attended by a steward in full colonial uniform. Passengers were served with a continental breakfast at the start of the journey. Combining history and good fun, the train winds its way through small towns where children waves as the train passes by.
The trip through villages and jungle including stops at various locations to wander through the local markets were a real treat for the children and train buffs alike. As the locomotive made a return journey from Papar, passengers experienced lunch in traditional tiffin containers featuring an exotic blend of continental and Malaysian delights.
