Chris Carey of Australia stole the limelight from his strong rivals when he fired a three-under 68 to seize the opening round lead at the Sabah Masters 2015.

The 32-year old journeyman was rather awe-struck too by his game play. Speaking with the media, he said ‘I was a bit surprised with my round today as I’ve been struggling with the flu last week and the greens were pretty hard to read today. Except for the little hiccup on the back nine, I took my chances with a couple of crucial birdie putts, which turned out well’.

The chasing pack which includes locals Airil Rizman Zahari, Khor Kheng Hwai and Tan Chien Hau, Thailand’s Pipatpon Naewsuk and Sutijet Kooratanapisan and Singapore’s Mardan Mamat are just a stroke behind of Carey in this USD100,000 event, which is also the finale to the 2014 Asean PGA Tour season.

Sabahan Tan showed a great opening effort of 69 on tough-scoring day. The 23-year old who turned professional last year after graduating from Ashford University Iowa is looking to shine in his first appearance at this prestigious tournament.
