August 31, 1957 is a day that will be fondly remembered by all Malaysians, both young and old. It was the day that our first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman, declared our country independent with seven shouts of ‘Merdeka!’.
Today, 56 years later, the cry continues to be featured prominently in Malaysia’s Independence Day celebrations. The word ‘Merdeka’ means independence or freedom in Bahasa Malaysia.
This year, Malaysia’s Independence Day theme is Malaysiaku Berdaulat : Tanah Tumpahnya Darahku or ‘My Sovereign Malaysia : My Native Land’. The theme song’s lyrics are a tribute to our fallen heroes in the Lahad Datu incident. A concept that focuses on the elements of unity and patriotism.
As we celebrate our nationhood and its continuation, may our country be blessed on this Merdeka day and in the future!
Selamat Hari Merdeka and Happy Malaysia Day!
