The Sabah International Fishing Tournament 2013 organised by the Sabah Anglers Association took place on May 23 to 26, 2013. A total of 122 participants in 14 boats were flagged off at the jetty of Sutera Harbour Marina & Country Club last Thursday.
The tournament entrants comprised of 103 from Sabah, 6 from Penang, 1 from Kuala Lumpur, 6 from Australia, 2 from the United Kingdom, 1 from South Africa, 1 from Germany and 1 from Taiwan. Two participants – a woman and a 13 year old anglers, became the first in the history of Sabah International Fishing Tournament to join the event.
There was also a change to this year’s fishing venue in which it was no longer bound within the 20 nautical miles radius off Pulau Mengalum as there were lesser tournament-sized fishes available in previous designated areas. In addition, the tournament was extended to a 4-day and 3-night trip giving anglers more time to catch their fishes.
Yesterday, Team Rod Warrior won the grand prize of RM15,000 with a total haul of 37.4 kilos. The winning team from Penang comprising of brothers Syed Azhar Al Gadrie and Syed Alwie together with their friend Benny Soon were also awarded a trophy, gold medals and fishing tackles.
The team celebrated a double victory when Syed Azhar captured the individual category with the biggest catch of the day – a whopping 19.6 kilos Amberjack.
In addition to this tournament, the winning catch was auctioned and a total of RM1,740 was collected through the auction. The collection was presented by Datuk Wilfred Lingham, President of the Sabah Angler Association to the family of the late Sergeant Baharin Hamid, who died in the recent Lahad Datu incident.
The 4-day tournament sponsored by Sabah Tourism Board and Sabah Fisheries Department aims to promote Sabah as one of the best destination for game fishing. The annual fishing tournament also encourages preservation, conservation and protection of our rich marine resources from exploitation.
As the venue sponsor, we are absolutely honored to be involved in this event.
