The annual Sabah International Fishing Tournament 2015 (SIFT) organised by the Sabah Anglers Association (SAA) will be held from April 22 to 26 this year.
Unlike other years, this time participants will be trying their luck to land the biggest fish in Terumbu Layang Layang, off Labuan.
SAA is expecting the participation of more than 200 anglers for the 5 days 4 nights tournament. They include international participants from Penang, Macau and Singapore, among others.
The format for SIFT has changed and it is now an Individual Championship event where the angler with the heaviest fish landed winning the RM25,000.00 First Prize.
Participants with the Second and Third heaviest fish will win RM10,000 and RM5,000 respectively. All three top winners will also be presented with trophies and certificates.
SAA President Datuk Wilfred Lingham said that as in previous years, Sharks and Rays are not allowed as catch in the tournament and they are to be released immediately if caught or participants will be disqualified.
“This year, we have included the ‘MAMENG’ (GIANT WARSSE) in the list of prohibited catch,” he said adding that the objective of not landing these fishes is in line with the tournament’s motto of ‘Save Our Seas’.
He added that SAA has also amended the minimum age of participants from 18 to 16-years-old with the aim to promote the sport of deep sea fishing among the younger generation.
“As this year’s tournament will be held in Terumbu Layang Layang, we have applied for and received the necessary approval from the relevant security agency. For security reasons, we are required to send in the details of the participants one month before the tournament therefore the SIFT 2015 registration will close on March 14th.
“Participants are required to send in the completed registration form and entry fee of RM450 for SAA member and RM500 for non-SAA member to the SIFT 2015 secretariat before or on March 14,” Datuk Wilfred Lingham said.
The participants will be flagged off from the Sutera Harbour Marina & Country Club at 9am on April 22 and are required to be back at the marina before 1pm on April 26. Judging will commence at 1pm and the prize presentation and closing ceremony is scheduled to be held at the same venue from 3pm onwards.
